Acmena is delighted to announce that Senior Human Factors Consultant, Justin Drinkwater, will present at the 2023 Conference on Railway Excellence (CORE).

Held in Melbourne on 19-21 June, the conference is one of the biggest rail events in the Australian rail industry calendar, with over 100 industry experts selected to present on a range of topics from signalling to major project innovations.

In his paper, ‘The Challenge of Deploying COTS Products into Australian Railways’, Justin explores the use Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) products in the development of rail systems, and the integration challenges involved in using generic products in such a complex and diverse technological environment.

Offering a means of better understanding each system component through a shared language, Justin proposes that the SHELL model provides Australian rail operators with a solution to making it easier to use ‘plug-and-play’ systems in complex change projects.

“There are many examples of great ideas becoming famous failures, especially when we attempt to create generational change with technology upgrades,” said Justin.

“I am excited to share how using foundational human factors tools can help to maximise the chance of project success, and to foster a holistic and shared understanding of complex socio-technical systems”.

Justin joins Acmena Principal Systems Assurance Consultant, Andy Gabler, who will be presenting from 2:20-3:00pm on Tuesday 20 June. Justin’s presentation is scheduled for 10:30-11:00am on Wednesday 21 June. For more information on the event head to the CORE 2023 website: https://www.core2023.org
