Acmena has been selected to present at the 2024 RISSB Rail Safety Conference.

Delivered by Principal Consultant, Daniel Munoz, and systems engineering intern, Wilson Law, the paper ‘Steering Transformation: The Role of AI and Large Language Models in Systems Engineering and Safety Assurance Within the Railway Industry’ is based on work conducted during an ongoing internal research project.

The innovative research project is focused on exploring the use of Artificial Intelligence and Large Language Models, such as ChatGPT, to radically streamline the process of creating high-quality documentation for projects, in addition to producing structured safety arguments and traceability assessment.

Taking a highly pragmatic approach, the project is focused on providing solutions to scenarios such as – how can AI and large language models be used to help delivery agencies or rail operators ensure the integrity of their SFAIRP demonstration in an age where projects are having to contend with ever increasing volumes of documentation?

The project has already resulted in the development of a Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) tool which serves to extract and embed domain-specific information into project documentation.

Held in Melbourne between 30 April and 1 May, the RISSB Rail Safety Conference brings together hundreds of rail transport operators, engineers, project managers, investigators, safety professionals and senior industry executives. All with a deep interest in maintaining Australia’s reputation as having one of the safest rail networks in the world.
