For the second year running, Acmena consultants have been selected to take part in RISSB’s Horizons program.

Dedicated to developing up-and-coming talent in the rail industry, each year the Horizons program offers young professionals the opportunity to broaden their industry networks, expand their knowledge of cutting-edge technology and develop an innovation mindset.

This year, Yassin Said and Luis Ayora Marin were invited to attend the program, which featured three two-day forums in Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney, plus webinars and group exercises. Attendees also participated in a Shark Tank-style pitching competition where participants had to present an idea to a panel of industry executives.

“The Horizons Program was a fantastic experience,” said Yassin. “I probably got the most out of the group project. I really enjoyed working with people from different backgrounds and roles, which is something I don’t get to do as everyone I work with is an engineer!

“It was a really useful exercise that taught the value of collaboration as we had to work to everyone’s strengths and explain problems in a way that everyone would understand.”

In similar style, Luis also valued the opportunity to gain new experiences and learn about different aspects of the industry.

“We had some excellent presentations on parts of the industry that I’m not directly involved in” Luis said. “A particular standout the presentation in Melbourne on managing a rail line and meeting availability requirements during the O&M stage of the lifecycle.

“I also had a great time networking with participants in other areas of the industry and from other cities in Australia. I met some amazing people with different perspectives of the rail industry, which helps me have a better understanding of our line of business.”
