Acmena Principal Consultant, Andrew Gabler, and Senior Consultant, Pravin Hiremath, have been selected to present at the 2024 Australian System Safety Conference.
Held at Customs House, Brisbane on 23 – 24 October, this year’s conference will focus on the increasing use of disruptive technologies and the challenges they present to system safety and cybersecurity.
Titled, ‘Are Quantitative Safety Targets for Railways Useful for Disruptive Technologies?’ the joint paper explores whether traditional metrics including Tolerable Hazard Rates, Functional Failure Rates and Safety Integrity Levels can adequately demonstrate that safety targets have been achieved when applied to disruptive technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI).
“Both Andrew and I are really looking forward to presenting at the conference,” said Pravin. “The integration of AI into railway systems challenges the conventional safety metrics that have been the backbone of safety assurance.
“As AI systems exhibit complexity and adaptive behaviors, traditional methods like Tolerable Hazard Rates and Safety Integrity Levels may not fully capture the safety performance of these systems.
“Our paper aims to address these gaps and provide recommendations for adapting safety frameworks to meet the unique challenges posed by AI.”
Featuring speakers from a diverse range of industries, including healthcare, defence, aviation, energy and security, the 2024 conference promises to deliver a comprehensive overview of both the benefits and challenges involved with the increasing use of disruptive technologies, including AI, in modern systems.
